Snake Identification in Louisville, KY & Southern Indiana
Licensed, insured, and humane — serving the entire Louisville metro region 24/7.
Call (502) 200-8928"Is it venomous?" is the first question everyone asks, and misidentification runs in both directions: harmless Northern Water Snakes and juvenile Rat Snakes are killed as "copperheads" constantly, while actual Copperheads get dismissed as harmless because they didn't rattle. Kentucky is home to four venomous species statewide — the Copperhead, Timber Rattlesnake, Cottonmouth, and Western Pygmy Rattlesnake — but only the first three occur anywhere near the Louisville region, and in practice the Copperhead is the one you are reasonably likely to meet (the pygmy rattlesnake is restricted to far western Kentucky). Alongside them live more than a dozen harmless species that do real work controlling rodents.
We identify snakes for Louisville and Southern Indiana residents every week: call and describe what you saw, or better, text us a photo taken from a safe distance. We'll tell you the species, whether it's a concern, and what — if anything — you should do about it. Identification is also built into every removal and inspection we perform, because the right response depends entirely on the species involved.

Snake Identification FAQs
Can you identify a snake from a photo?
Usually, yes — a reasonably clear photo showing the head and body pattern is enough for a confident ID in most cases. Take it from a safe distance (zoom, don't approach), and call (502) 200-8928. Never risk getting close to an unidentified snake for a better picture.
How do I tell a copperhead from a harmless snake?
Copperheads have tan-to-copper bodies with darker hourglass-shaped crossbands — narrow across the spine, wide on the sides. The most common look-alikes are Northern Water Snakes (bands widest across the back, found near water) and juvenile Rat Snakes (gray with dark blotches). Our copperhead removal page has a full identification guide, but when in doubt, keep your distance and ask us.
Are most snakes in Louisville dangerous?
No. The overwhelming majority of snakes in the Louisville area are harmless species like Garter Snakes, Black Rat Snakes, and Northern Water Snakes, which are genuinely beneficial rodent and pest controllers. The Copperhead is the one venomous species you are reasonably likely to encounter, and even copperhead bites, while serious, are very rarely fatal.
Is snake identification free?
A quick phone or photo ID costs you nothing — we would far rather identify a harmless rat snake for free than have you take risks or kill a beneficial animal unnecessarily. If the situation needs removal or an on-site assessment, we quote that before any work begins.
